About the show:
Little Shop Of Horrors is the story of Seymour Krelborn, a meek Skid Row florist who makes a Faustian pact with a tiny plant in order to win the heart of Audrey, the girl he loves. While Audrey doesn't notice the romance blooming between them, she does recognize the moneymaking potential of the exotic little plant. Soon money pours in and Seymour becomes a celebrity, but behind the glamour and fame lies a secret Seymour can't reveal - this strange and unusual plant's favorite food is human blood. As the plant grows, its demands for food grow too, and Seymour starts to suspect that the plant might have an agenda larger than light and soil. Little Shop of Horrors includes such well-known musical numbers as "Somewhere That's Green," "Suddenly Seymour" and the title song “Little Shop of Horrors”.

Casting Requirements

- Seymour Krelborn – Our insecure, naïve, put-upon florist’s clerk hero. Above all, he’s a sweet and well-meaning little man. He is not a silly, prat-falling nerd, and therefore should not be played as the hero of a Jerry Lewis film.
- Audrey –The Billie-Dawn-like secret love of Seymour’s life. If you took Judy Holiday, Carol Channing, Marilyn Monroe and Goldie Hawn, removed their education and feelings of self-worth, dressed them in spiked heels and a low-cut black dress and them shook them up in a test tube to extract what’s sweetest and most vulnerable – that’d be Audrey.
- Mr Mushnik – Their boss. A failure of an East Side florist. His accent is more middle class New York than Eastern European. He seldom smiles but often sweats.
- Orin – A handsome dentist with a black leather jacket and sadistic tendencies. He is not, however, a leftover from the movie version of Grease. Think instead of an egotistical pretty-boy – all got up like a greaser but thinking like an insurance salesman and talking like a radio announcer. (The actor who plays him also plays A Voice Not Unlike God’s, Wino #2, Customer, Radio Announcer, Mr. Bernstein, Mrs. Luce, Skip Snip and Patrick Martin.)
- The Plant (Audrey Two) – An anthropomorphic cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado. It has a huge, nasty-looking pod which gains a shark-like aspect when open and snapping at food. This creature is played by a series of increasingly large puppets, manipulated by one Puppeteer (who also plays Wino #1). The first time we see The Plant, it is less than one foot tall. The last time we see it, it fills much of the stage.
- Voice of the Plant - Provided by an actor on an offstage microphone. The voice is very Motown-based, street-smart, funky, conniving and villainous – Rhythm and Blues’ answer to Richard the Third.
- Crystal, Ronnette and Chiffon – Three female street urchins who function as participants in the action and a Greek Chorus outside it. They’re hip, smart and the only people in the whole cast who really know what’s going on. In their Greek Chorus capacity, they occasionally sing to the audience directly. And when they do, it’s often with a “secret-smile” that says: “we know something you don’t know.”

FRONT ROW CENTRE PLAYERS

OPEN CALL FOR DIRECTORS, 2007-2008 SEASON

Front Row Centre Players invites directors to make proposals for shows to be produced during our 2007/2008 season. We encourage directors experienced in musical theatre to submit proposals (following the guidelines below) to Joey Sayer, Artistic Director.

FRC produces three musicals each year ("Oklahoma!", "Chicago" and "Little Shop of Horrors" in our current season; "Leader of the Pack", "Evita" and "Hair" in our previous season) and has produced musicals for nearly 20 years.

For our current season, we are looking for shows that will create an exciting and balanced roster. Ideally, we want two potential blockbuster shows and a show that may be lesser-known but will entertain, inspire and deserves to be produced. One show is ideally a "Hot!" show, which explores more mature themes (i.e, "Chicago", "Hair", "A New Brain", "Company"). Thus, the sky is the limit for possibilities.

Please follow the guidelines below to propose shows.

1) Proposals must include the following information:

* Name of Director
* Experience of director with musical theatre and other related experience
* Name of Show
* Composer/Lyricist/Book Writer of Show; other creative credits, as well as rights holder (if known)
* Brief Description of Show
* Director's Vision for the show
* Hot! or not?
* Potential Cast Size of show, with male/female ration
* Possible member of directorial creative team (if known)
* Potential size of band/orchestra
* Potential special effect/technical considerations
* Any other comments or considerations

2) Proposals are to be emailed to Joey Sayer, Artistic Director of Front Row Centre Players, at artistic@frontrowcentre.ca. Any questions can also be sent to this email address.

3) Proposals must be received by midnight, December 31, 2006 to be considered.

All proposals will be considered by the artistic director, and recommendations will be put for to the FRC Board early in the new year to be made official.

Thank you for your interest in Front Row Centre Players!
