January 9, 2010    Well, Hello Dolly! FRC’s Opening Night a Big Hit

Front Row Centre Players’ performance of Hello Dolly! opened last night to a large enthusiastic audience, wild laughter and a standing ovation at the Victor Mitchell Theatre in the Pumphouse Theatres. Always ready to take on a big show, FRC’s production features Jerry Herman’s uplifting music, gorgeous period costumes, cleverly designed rotating sets, and talented performers with extensive Musical Theatre experience.

Multi-talented though she may be, Mrs. Dolly Levi did not actually teach any of the cast to dance.

Appreciative audience members stayed afterwards for the Opening Night Gala, a growing FRC tradition where the audience celebrates with cast and crew at an on-stage reception. The menu featured delicious cheesecake graciously prepared by the CheeseCake Café on Northland Drive, and appetizers provided by the Cactus Club. Front Row Centre Players was also grateful for the Opening Night sponsorship of Executive Royal Inn, Special Events Rental, Sobey’s, and Safeway.

“We’re delighted by the enthusiastic audience response,” remarked Darren Stewart, Producer. “The laughter and applause we heard tonight is a great example of the experience we hope to bring to everyone.” Hello Dolly! runs through January 23rd, with evening and matinee performances. Tickets are available online at www.pumphousetheatre.ca or the box office at (403) 263-0079.

Next up for FRC is Nunsense – the Mega-Musical starting May 21st. As well, a special run of Forbidden Broadway opens April 15th, with tickets available for sale at Hello Dolly! performances.

In operation for over 20 years, Front Row Centre Players is Calgary’s Premier Community Musical Theatre Company. To get involved as cast, crew, or audience member, visit our website at www.frontrowcentre.ca

December 1, 2009    OPEN CALL FOR DIRECTORS, 2010-2011 SEASON

Front Row Centre Players invites directors to make proposals for shows to be produced during our 2010-2011 season.

We encourage directors experienced in musical theatre to submit proposals (following the guidelines below) to Joey Sayer and Andrea Sereda, Co-Artistic Directors.

FRC produces at least three musicals each year (“Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street", "Hello Dolly!" “Forbidden Broadway” and "Nunsense" in our current season; “Godspell", "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Grease" in our previous season) and has produced musicals for over 20 years.

For our upcoming season, we are looking for shows that will create an exciting and balanced roster. In our most recent seasons, we have sought three blockbusters due to fundraising needs. Previous to that, we have sought two potential blockbuster shows and a show that may be lesser-known but will entertain, inspire and deserves to be produced. All shows must have a commercial viability and be able to recoup their costs. Shows proposed can be family shows or what we have called a "Hot!" show, which explores more mature themes. Please see below for examples of shows that can be proposed.

Participating in Front Row Centre shows is on a completely voluntary basis. There are no honoraria nor out-of-pocket expense reimbursements that are not directly related to the show and approved by the producer.

Please follow the guidelines below to propose shows. Please note that proposals not containing this information will not be seriously considered.

1. Proposals must include the following information:

Part A
Name of Director
Experience of director with musical theatre and other related experience

Part B
Name of Show including composer/lyricist/book writer
Rights holder (if unsure, please use the resources available on our website)
Brief Description of Show
Director's Vision for the show
Hot!(adult themed) or not?
Potential Cast Size of show, with male/female ratio
Possible members of directorial creative team (if known)
Potential size of band/orchestra
Potential special effect/technical considerations
Any other comments or considerations

2. Proposals are to be emailed as an attachment to Joey Sayer and Andrea Sereda, Artistic Directors of Front Row Centre Players, at artistic@frontrowcentre.ca. Any questions can also be sent to this email address.

3. Proposals must be received by midnight, December 31, 2009 to be considered.

4. The following shows are the type of shows we would like to see proposed:
Blockbuster Shows:
Guys and Dolls
South Pacific
The Producers
Singin’ in the Rain
Hot! Shows/or lesser known shows that deserve to be produced:
Urinetown
Working
Chess
Rent

The artistic directors will consider proposals for the above listed shows in addition to other productions of this nature that potential directors are passionate about.

MENTORSHIP:
FRC is committed to including and introducing new people into the theatre. Individuals with little or no experience in directing are encouraged to submit a personal proposal with a letter of intent, resume and any relevant theatre experience and may be considered for assistant director opportunities.

All proposals will be considered by the artistic directors, and recommendations will be put for to the FRC Board early in the New Year to be made official.

Thank you for your interest in Front Row Centre Players!

Innocence twists into vengeance on the cobblestone streets of 19th century London. Come along on a sophisticated, macabre, and uncompromising tale as Benjamin Barker, a barber, becomes Sweeney Todd, the demon butcher, and his landlady, the local pie proprietress, goes from making "The Worst Pies in London" to creating a culinary crime described only as "God that's Good." This barbarous ode to vengeance accomplishes the rare task of offering intense drama, darkly side-splitting humour and a ripping musical score.
